Metroblogging launches #40: Mumbai

Metroblogging has launched their 40th site – Mumbai:

Can you think of a better way to end 2005 than with the launch of our 40th Metroblogging city? Neither could we which is just one more reason we’re excited to announce Mumbai! Since that has gotten a few puzzled looks around these parts we’re going to go ahead and point out that the city used to be called Bombay (but was officially changed in 1995). It’s our first Indian city and the last one we’ll be launching this year. Stop by and see what’s going on.

Syntagma: New Blogs

Syntagma Media has some new blogs launching:

Back into action with a swing. Two new Syntagma Media blogs go live this week:

1. Vista Office will look at the two major product releases from Microsoft this year ~ Windows Vista and Office “12″. Live tomorrow.

2. Digital Camera Latest. Yes, SynMed has a gadget blog. Not just to complete the portfolio though. Your correspondent is a long-standing photographer who spent much of his youth toiling over fixerlated paper in the darkroom. He’s delighted with the pixelated world of digital photography and can’t wait for his new Canon EOS 350D (that most-wanted item of kit) to arrive shortly. Up before the weekend.

JOAB closes, rumblings at Fine Fools

Jack of All Blogs is closing:

Thank you guys for making me what I am today. I appreciate Scrivs for all he has done in helping me build a name for myself and I have some huge things in store for 2006. As of today this is my last post for 2005 at Fine Fools. In the near future you are going to find me launching something really special with some great people. It’s more than a blog network its a family of blogs united around building people brands. I don’t want to hype this thing any more than it needs to. It deeply saddens me to leave and this is no hoax. For all my subscribers I don’t know what will happen with this domain. I hope someone cool gets to use it. Whoever it may be good luck and godspeed.

This announcement comes on top of a post from Scrivs over at Fine Fools:

I have failed. I have not met the expectations of some of the writers in this Network. Some feel that I have been simply playing a game and not taking this serious enough and therefore they are angry with me and if that is their point of view they have every right to be.

Cowboy quit because he just wasn’t happy with me and honestly there are many things I am not happy with involving this Network, but I understood why certain things were the way they were.

There are great writers in this Network. Did I not provide them with the means to being successful? Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. It’s hard to tell from the inside, but if you have people quitting then I guess you haven’t. I know that I am not the most popular person on the web and many people think of me as an “idiot” or someone who has no idea of what they are doing. Maybe you can now use Fine Fools as your proof.

There’s an additional post from Cowboy over at his new blog: cow.boyspoke.

More to the story?

Interview with Heather Snodgrass of [decentcontent]

Our interview today is with Heather Snodgrass of [decentcontent] & Spoke Media:

About

Tell us briefly about yourself

I’m a freelance writer and consultant. I recently relocated to New York City from San Diego, as most of my writers live out here and I was running on East Coast time as it was. There was nothing really holding me in San Diego, so this seemed like a logical choice for me.

Tell us about [decentcontent] and your sites….

The concept behind [dc] and the other spoke media sites to provide a platform for exposing fresh and solid talent. I want to spotlight and nurture that talent and give the writers an audience that they wouldn’t necessarily have if they were doing it on their own. While the sites have a similar tone and feel, each of them bring their own voice and opinions to the mix. It’s a very interesting, humbling and stimulation environment to be a part of.

There are many blog networks out there now – what makes spoke media different than the rest?

I think the problem with a lot of the other blog networks out there is there is so much focus on the design, and not enough focus on the content. Design and aesthetics is good and all, but if the content isn’t there, you’re not going to retain readership over an extended period of time.

Tell us about being a Professional Blogger – how did you get into this lifestyle? Do you think it’s a viable career option for the long-term?

I’m hardly what could be classed as a “Professional Blogger”. I’d love to make a living like this, working with the amazing people that I do on a daily basis, and there are a lot of monetizing options on the horizon for spoke media. Right now though, it’s just a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Not that I’m complaining – I love what I do, and have faith that it will start paying off in a monetary form in the very near future for me and my team. I’m not sure if it’s a viable long-term career option, given the volatile nature of the internet. Maybe the money is in building something and selling it off. Maybe it’s in licensing, or in back-end development. Personally, I know where I want to be at in five years, and it’s not necessarily going to be as web-heavy as it is right now.

What do you do when you’re not blogging?

I work on my various writing projects. I write business plans and help plan web marketing strategies for small businesses. I design and consult merchandising displays for retail spaces. I try to keep up with the people who are important to me, which is hard when they’re spread out all over the world. I try to be everything to everyone, which doesn’t usually work out the way I want it to.

Your computer & OS of choice? Why?

Office

12″ Apple Powerbook, OSX Tiger. Because you couldn’t pay me to use a PC again. Ever.

Software that you use each day?

Photoshop CS2, NVU, Flock, Fetch, Adium, Entourage, iTunes. I’m fairly basic when it comes to my applications.

Websites you visit each day?

I generally scan through my Bloglines, to see if there’s anything worth looking at. I visit the blogs of the people that write for me, the sites I write for, as well as any articles or sites that get submitted to me via [dc]. I check the basics – NYTimes, Google News, Style.com. I don’t really have sites that I obsessively check everyday – I’ve been living in a little bit of a vacuum the last few months.

What advice would you give someone who is new to blogging and looking to increase their traffic?

Make sure you have something that’s visually appealing – if you can, try and hack up your template a little to make it your own. But really, really concentrate on your CONTENT. Be passionate about something. Anything. Stand by what you write, and be yourself. More than anything, people respond to honesty and ingenuity.

What’s next for [decentcontent] in next 12 months?

We’ve just acquired some incredible new writers, and will be moving onto version two of the site in late January. Other than adding more talent to our stable, I can’t really tell you much more at this point – it’s all very hush hush. You know how it is.

Our thanks to Heather. Visit [decentcontent] and girlspoke for more of her writings.

b5 interviews Jason Bean

b5media has published another of their blogger interviews – this time with Jason Bean:

What do you write for b5, and what are your other projects?

I’ve taken over the Office 12 Watch blog from John Evans. Other projects….other projects? Hmmm, I do some web design on the side and my personal blog. Then there’s the stuff I’m working on for curing world poverty, hunger and peace, oh and the garage always needs cleaned out too.

Behind the intelligence and the technical know-how, who is Jason Bean?

A 30-something husband and father of two wonderful kids. Son of a preacher, and youngest of three boys, the other two are pastors too! I enjoy lots of different things, grew up in the country but obviously appreciate all kinds of technology and gadgets too. I was the class clown in school. I’ve almost died three times. Is that enough about me?

WordPress 2.0 Released

For all of you WordPress users, Version 2.0 has been released.

Blog Herald publishes list of 10 most interesting people

Blog Herald has published a list of the 10 Most Interesting People in the Blogosphere:

3. Jason Calacanis, Weblogs Inc., (AOL)

Jason made the list last year, but this year he makes it for another reason, legitimising the value of blogs as a serious and profitable media play by selling Weblogs Inc., for a rumored $25 million to AOL.

4. Michelle Malkin

This right of center political blogger where’s a similar teflon coat to that of Mena Trott, but the rubbish thrown at her by her enemies in the left make the criticism levelled a Mena look like a English tea party. Malkin continues to grow from strength to strength and now regularly features in the top 10 lists of blogs. There is apparently no stopping this amazing powerhouse of the political blogosphere.

5. David Krug (aka Liberal Cowboy), Jack of All Blogs & the Team at Go Flock Yourself

The rise of the anti-Web 2.0/ blogosphere spin bloggers are best typified by Liberal Cowboy and the blogger or bloggers behind Go Flock Yourself, leading the charge against what some would consider to be the ruling elite of the blogosphere and their marketing/ Web 2.0 newspeak (or is that newspeakr?)

Busted

For once, we’ve been scooped. Jack of all Blogs has a hint of what we’re working on:

btw. I found this interesting site makes me wonder what Matt has up his sleeve. Does he have sleeves in his blog network?

And yes, I have sleeves. Long sleeves with lots of sekrits.

Instablogs launches Unholywars

Instablogs has launched Unholywars, a blog focused on terrorism:

R Unholywars

“Unholywars” is our latest offering to the web world. As the terror bomb ticks away, the humanity cries in distress. Tales of terror, violence, intolerance and senseless killings keep pouring in from all parts of the world. And in this chaos-marred scenario, “Human rights are the first casualty”.

This blog, authored by a senior journalist with an experience of more than three decades in the print media, tries to cover all forms of terrorism, reasons thereof and offer solutions, if any. Apart from fetching you the news-as-it-happens, the writer also tries to project human rights violations in the most humane manner.

The design of the blog has been done in keeping with the theme, which reflects a war-weary world and various shades of human suffering.
